Textured Protein

Textured insect protein is extracted from variety of insects but crickets are primary sources of textured form of insects’ protein. Textured insect protein is proven to be a potential replacer of dairy, eggs and meat. It contains around 60% of water and 77gm of protein per pound similar to the ground beef, hence it can be easily substituted in various food recipes. Textured insect protein is also used as an ingredient in cookies, Bolognese, cookies as well as in some ice creams. Research has been going on to widen the application of textured insect protein across baked goods.

The popularity of textured insect protein is growing as it provides all the health benefits of insect consumption without the discomfort of eating insect in any form. Hence, its acceptability among the consumers is high and is growing at a steady rate. Moreover, textured insect protein production consumes five times less feed, 200 times less water and produces 23 times less greenhouse gases over animal-based protein.
